30 Year Followup of Mental Health Outcome Following Childhood Malnutrition

Early malnutrition is well known to exert an adverse impact on brain development, which may have lifelong effects on cognitive and behavioral function. This project will evaluate the impact of well-documented malnutrition early in life on young adults from Barbados and a socio-economically matched comparison control group who did not suffer such an insult. This sample has been followed periodically since they were five years of age, with effects noted in terms of cognitive and academic development as well as behavior, namely attentional processes. The lifelong impact and manifestations of these developmental perturbations can now be evaluated in individuals who are in their early thirties. Our component of the project is neuropsychological evaluation of these adults.
