Why Become a IDDRC Investigator

Why Become a Member?

Membership in the Children’s Hospital Boston IDDRC entitles investigators to use the Center’s Core facilities on a priority basis and at reduced rates. IDDRC members network with other Center Investigators at a number of educational activities conducted throughout the year, including our IDDRC Neuroscience Seminar series. They are also enrolled in an NICHD-sponsored national DDRC web portal, where they may contact and interact with investigators at our own institutions as well as other Centers throughout the country.

Each year, our Center offers support to one “New Program Development” investigator. A successful candidate for the New Program Development Award receives funding for direct research support, not to exceed a total of $50,000 in direct costs per year. The award is for one year and, with satisfactory progress, is renewable for a second year. We are interested particularly in supporting investigators at the Assistant Professor level for this opportunity.  The research areas of relevance to the MRRC are listed in the attached handout. Nominations for New Program Investigators are solicited each spring for the academic year beginning on July 1.

Eligibility and Membership Requirements

To become a member of our Center, PIs must have at least one federally funded project that is relevant to mental retardation or developmental disabilities as outlined in our mission statement. To support our ongoing funding, IDDRC members are expected to cite our Center (“CHB MRDDRC, P30 HD18655”) in all publications that result from work supported by one or more of our Core facilities. Additionally, all IDDRC members are required to submit updated information concerning their funded and pending research every spring for our annual report..

How to Apply

To apply for membership in our IDDRC, investigators are asked to submit a letter of application to the IDDRC Executive Committee accompanied by an NIH biosketch and a one-page summary of at least one NIH-funded project relevant to mental retardation.

Investigators who do not meet our eligibility requirements may still use our Core facilities as a non-member (at higher rates).  For additional information please access the Core web site or contact them directly.

To apply for funding as our New Program Investigator, investigators must submit a brief pre-proposal by April 1 for consideration. (Click here for additional information) The chosen applicant will be asked to submit a full proposal (equivalent to an R21 NIH submission) by May 1.
